The importance of Insulation when using a heat pump

Since Heat Pumps are restricted in power outputs due to all domestic houses only having snigle phase electricity, its imperative to "double up" on your insulation. A typical geothermal heat pump or air to water heat pump will only supply 15-17Kw into the house in optimum conditions. In big dwellings, this power output might not be enough so you either need to install 2 single phase heat pumps or a 3 phase heat pump. You should also consider that the biger heat pump you go for, the more expensive the electricity costs as there will be a bigger compressor in the unit. This will give you higher input loads which will result in higher costs.

The solution to this is to use Kingpan (never polystyrene) in the cavity and in the floor. Also the attic should be insualted with 8-12 inches of fibre-glass. There should be no stone unturned when it comes to insulating your home and even more so when a single phase heat pump is your primary source of heat which will not give you hige power outputs.
