I was in Italy with my manufacturer for Solar Panel Traning last week. Myself and a few plumbers which I took with me went to projects where evacuated tubes were installed. We wanted to know how they commissioned systems, how they charged systems, how they wired systems correctly , etc. This particular project was in the University of Pisa where they had over 40m2 of Evacuated Tubes Servicing the building.
We tried to fill the system at around 11am. We failed as the tubes were full of steam from 1 or 2 hours of sunlight they received that morning. The next day, we returned and filled the system earlier in the morning to avoid the steam.
Our partners Dalpex told us, the best time to fill evacuated tube systems in in the night time or when the protected cover is still in place. This is because any bit of UV light that the panels receive, they can turn any bit of vapour in the panels to steam. He said this never happens with flat panels due to lack of heat and they can be filled anytime.
Later that day we filled a school nearby which had flat panels installed. We were easily were able to fill that system at 2.30pm as the plates had only 25-30 degrees of heat in them at the time. The difference was astounding.
If we learned one thing from our visit, it was the big difference in the speed up time that the evacuated tubes can heat a store of water over flat plates.
Above is a photo of the university of pisa job where the evacuated tubes were placed on the ground.
