Differences in Underfloor heating systems

There are a variety of underfloor heating systems on the market today. To makes sure you are getting your money’s worth, here a few pointers that you should look out for when making a decision.

(1)There are a variety of systems that use the cheaper Pex pipe which is not as rigid as Pex-al (plastic Aluminium pipe). It contains an oxygen barrier and is tested to 95 degrees 10 bar (European standard). The main effect is in the laying process. The Pex will not hold its shape when bent to form the return loop and consequently must be pinned at regular intervals to avoid the pipe "following” the contractor.
(2) To save energy, it is worth installing programmable thermostats. From this, you can put your system on setback in the evening and in rooms that are not being used. Also you can time your heating system in each individual zone.
(3)Some systems don’t come with a fully made up mixing kit. If not, the plumber has to install a bypass for the pump, a blending valve, etc
(4)With Some systems there is only one area in which you can balance the system. Competent systems have mixing kits that have 3 different balancing points and flow and return gauges to make the contractor’s job much simpler.
(5)Some systems do not supply a pump module as standard i.e. the pump runs as long as the time clock is calling which contravenes part L of the building regulations
(6)Some systems do not supply a standard wiring centre .Contractors are told to use jointing strips to join the room stat to the actuator.
(7) Flow rate is an important factor with UFH systems. Make sure if you are installing a 12-14 port manifold that the pump on the manifold or mixing kit can overcome the resistance.
(8) With some systems, there is no safety thermostat on the mixing kit. Therefore if the 3 port mixing valve fails, you risk destroying your floors as the temperature will be too high. This has happened on a lot of projects and court cases have ensued. The mixing kit is the “brains of the unit”. Make sure you install a good one
